Types of financial assistance available
There are four main sources of school fee assistance in South Africa: government fee exemptions (for state schools); school-specific bursaries (most IEB schools offer them); private foundation bursaries (external organisations); and corporate CSI bursary programmes. Each has different eligibility requirements and application processes.
Government fee exemptions
Any parent who cannot afford fees at a fee-charging government school can apply for a full or partial exemption. The South African Schools Act requires schools to consider all applications. Exemptions are calculated on household income relative to the annual school fee. Apply at the beginning of the year or as soon as financial difficulty arises — late applications are still considered.
School bursaries at IEB schools
Most top IEB schools offer merit and/or needs-based bursaries, often funded by alumni associations or school foundations. Schools like Bishops, Hilton, Michaelhouse, St John's, and St Stithians have active bursary programmes. Apply directly to the school's bursar or development office. Applications typically open in March–June for the following year.
Private and corporate bursaries
Organisations like the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust, Anglo American Chairman's Fund, Old Mutual Foundation, Investec Bursary Programme, and many others offer school-level bursaries for academically strong learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. Search the Department of Social Development's bursary database and the Eduloan bursary finder.
Tips for a strong application
Start early — most bursaries are competitive and have fixed deadlines. Write a compelling personal motivation that goes beyond financial need: show academic achievement, community involvement, and a clear sense of purpose. Provide all supporting documents (school reports, affidavits of income, parent ID) upfront. Follow up after submitting to confirm receipt.
