When to apply
For competitive private schools, applications typically open in February–April of the year before your child starts. Some schools (particularly top IEB schools and boarding schools) have waiting lists from birth. For Grade 1, apply by June–July the year before entry. For Grade 8, apply by May–August the year before. Government schools follow a provincial registration window, typically August–October for the following year.
Documents typically required
Most schools require: certified copy of birth certificate; copies of parents' ID documents; latest school report (Grades 1–7) or assessment report (Grade R); proof of address; immunisation record (for younger grades); completed application form with non-refundable application fee.
Assessments and interviews
Competitive IEB schools often require a written assessment (Grade 7 entry) or interview with the child and parents (Grade 1 entry). Assessments test reading, writing, numeracy, and reasoning — not curriculum knowledge. Prepare your child by reading widely and ensuring comfort with basic numbers rather than drilling past papers.
Improving your chances
Apply to multiple schools — have a first choice, a strong second choice, and a safety net. Write a personal covering letter for competitive schools explaining why the school suits your child specifically. If there's a waiting list, confirm your place on it regularly and indicate serious intent. Siblings of current pupils typically get preference.
Government school registration
Each province has its own registration window. In most provinces, Phase 1 registration for Grade 1 opens in August. Submit applications to multiple schools simultaneously — you can decline offers you don't want. Use the provincial online portal where available (GautengOnline, WesternCapeSchoolFinder). Register in your feeder zone first — catchment area applications are prioritised.
